    Frequently Asked Questions

The devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus can be traced back to the eleventh and twelfth centuries. It wasn’t until the private revelations of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque (1647-1690), however, that Christ chose to reveal the desires of his Heart and to confide the task of imparting new life to the devotion.

The Sacred Heart Book of Devotions has the complete history and description of the devotion.

During a private revelation of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, she saw: “this divine Heart as on a throne of flames, more brilliant than the sun and transparent as crystal. It has its adorable wound and was encircled with a crown of thorns, which signified the pricks our sins caused him. It was surmounted by a cross.” She heard Christ say to her, “Behold the Heart that has so loved men… instead of gratitude I receive from the greater part (of mankind) only ingratitude…”

The Sacred Heart Book of Devotions contains a reproduction of St. Margaret Mary’s original drawing, as well as other historical pieces of artwork of the Sacred Heart.

The Sacred Heart is celebrated in various ways:

    • By attending the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass on the first Friday of every month.
    • By daily meditations and prayer during the month of June.
    • By acts of consecration.
    • By enthroning it in the home.
    • By celebrating the feast day.
    • By prayers and novenas.

All of these forms of celebration can be found in the Sacred Heart Book of Devotions.

The feast day for the Sacred Heart of Jesus is always nineteen days after Pentecost Sunday.

The Sacred Heart is known for granting graces—in the form of twelve promises—to all those who practice the devotion.

The twelve promises of the Sacred Heart can be found in the Sacred Heart Book of Devotions, as well as many ways to practice the devotion.

There are many prayers to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. There are also several forms of novenas, a chaplet, a litany, acts of consecration and reparation, and more that can all be found in the Sacred Heart Book of Devotions. One popular Sacred Heart prayer is this one:

O most holy Heart of Jesus, fountain of every blessing, I adore you, I love you and with a lively sorrow for my sins, I offer you this poor heart of mine. Make me humble, patient, pure and wholly obedient to your will. Grant, good Jesus, that I may live in you and for you. Protect me in the midst of danger; comfort me in my afflictions; give me health of body, assistance in my temporal needs, your blessing on all that I do, and the grace of a holy death. Amen.
